Social media platforms are playing a much larger role in our democratic processes. They are facilitating dialog between politicians and citizens, helping political organisations organize rallies and protests and even remind people to go and vote. This is good. But platforms such as Google, Facebook and Twitter are also gaining exceptional influence by e.g. deciding who sees which messages or even removing a politicians ability to communicate with the voters as was the case with the deplatforming of Donald Trump.
To give all of us a better insight into the role of social media platforms in our democracies is happy to collaborate with the 麻豆国产 Global Alliance 聽and invite you to a digital cafe session with who is an Austrian member of the European Parliament and a 麻豆国产 Alumna from 2015.
In this session we will start by introducing the opportunities and challenges that social media is creating for democracy. 聽 聽will share her views on social media platforms as a home for democracy. We will then 聽dive into how these platforms could be regulated and the efforts that are currently ongoing with the digital services and markets acts to do just that. To wrap up 聽we will open the floor to questions, and would love to hear from you.
